We have worked on creating an interview, in groups, where we chose a character from among Ruth, Kathy and Tommy in ‘Never Let Me Go’. After assigning ourselves specific roles as interviewers and deciding the purpose of this interview, we proceeded to frame 5 questions that would lead to the intended response. This is an important skill that we needed to work on as it helped us understand how to build on an idea and how important framing questions is to elicit a specific and desired response.
We are now working towards our summative assessment which will be a group debate. We are currently in the process of reading the resource material and assigning roles to each member of our group depending on our affirmative or negative stand for our respective motions.

During the past two weeks, we learned about Isomerism. We talked about the types of structural isomerism, their recognition, and the nomenclature. We also discussed our formative assessment paper and homework sheet. We discussed scientific terms like Polymerization, Polymers and Monomers with the help of daily life examples.

We concluded the unit Consequences with our summative assessment. To delve deeper into the concept of mitosis, we did an interesting interactive activity based on the same. We also learned about calculating mitotic index using an interactive virtual lab task. To prepare for our e-assessment we have discussed previous worksheets and have started doing revision worksheets for concepts learnt previously.

We initiated our new e-portfolio unit, ‘Art Speaks Out’. We discussed about the unit details – the SOI, KC, GC and RC and explored about different artists who have had an impact on the society through their music. We discussed about the musical elements used in the songs that we shortlisted for analysis (for the e-portfolio project).
We discussed our performance in the summative assessments in class and on how to frame better answers based on criterion B. We also wrote a reflection on the unit in the form of short articles and letter to the editor to Hindi newspapers.
After we completed criterion C, we were given feedback which aids in contextualizing our achievement levels. Then we continued to work on our portfolios by starting criterion D where we reflect on our products and the process of creation. After taking feedback on each element of our product to test its utility in a variety of mediums, we concluded criterion D. We then began discussing our ideas for our final e-portfolio unit.

Last week, we spent our lesson trying to master the art of persuasion through petitions. We learnt the different factors which may allow an author to persuade the reader on the basis of logic, ethics and emotions. We developed this skill by writing a petition to unban a book which is currently banned in some parts of the world. To test our skills, we also took an assessment, which asked us to write a petition to impose a ban on a book with inappropriate content.

Before we wrapped our unit with the Summative Assessment, we revised all the concepts with an educational version of the game ‘Jeopardy’, made by our peer Manya Malhotra. It was an interactive and smart way of revision, which all of us thoroughly enjoyed. Soon after we had the Summative Assessment, and the game had helped us get a better grasp on the concepts and marked the end of our unit. This week we began our new unit, ‘Population, Migration and Urbanization’. The introductory activity focused on population growth and we used our prior knowledge to list the most populous cities in 1950’s-60’s and then in 2000-2020. We have learnt the basic terminology for instance, optimum population. We also compared Malthusian and Boserup theory.

For the past two weeks, we have been working on Criterion C strand i. We had also added finishing touches to our Criterion B and then submitted it for assessment. Strand i of Criterion C is the planning which we showcase through a Gantt chart. We had been struggling to find suitable and appropriate software for the creation of Gantt charts. However, receiving ample time for Criterion C strand i, this unit helped us overcome the struggle. We developed our time-management skills in the past two weeks as we met the deadline for submitting our Criterion B for assessment. Additionally, we also utilized our time given for Criterion C strand i, efficiently.

In the last two weeks, we initiated the formal documentation of task 1 & 2 of our e-portfolio.
In task 1, we researched about two different Indian and western classical composers and analysed one composition from each and gave a presentation.
In task 2, we wrote about the ideas and proposals we had for our final product (composition), which would be a fusion of the western and Indian music cultures.
Both tasks required great research and thinking. Since we did not have much prior knowledge about Indian classical music, the tasks felt slightly difficult, as we had a lot of new things to learn and explore in this genre, nevertheless, we took up the challenge.
We look forward to our next music lesson.

Last week, we learnt more about Indian classical music. We learnt about the structure of rhythm (tala) and how is it different from the time signatures that we generally follow in western music. We learnt to speak the syllables and clap on teen tala. We watched a video on Raga Tiluk Kamod from the movie ‘Khuda ke liye’ in order to analyse it as part of my task 1 in the e-portfolio. We chose it because it already had incorporated elements of western classical music. We also learnt a new bandish (composition) based on Raga Bhupali – ‘Tore Naino Ne Mose Aisi Keenhi’. Since it was based on the pentatonic scale of western music, so it wasn’t very hard for me to pick up the notation of the composition.

| French Bonjour tout le monde! And we are back to our French class! After a relaxing summer vacation, it is time to gear up and prepare ourselves for the final year French assessment. That is how we felt during the first week when we were introduced to the criteria being assessed for the bench marking assessment. In the second week, many skill based activities were conducted to practice our communication skills such as creating a story in French, learning the vocabulary of web and technology and reading different texts, as well as watching interactive videos. These activities have helped us to recapitulate our vocabulary and develop a clear understanding of the format of the assessment. Hindi – Students had an essential agreement discussion in class and they shared their views in written and oral form. Students also had their benchmarking assessment based on criteria B C and D. They also had an ATL thinking skill based activity as cartoon analysis. They discussed some social-political cartoons and shared their views after analysis. Students brainstormed on the topic of healthy lifestyle: what is a healthy body and does mind and body affect each other in terms of health? Spanish -The teachers conducted an ice breaking activity, ¿Qué es lo que más difícil en español? Based on that activity we started our classes with honing our speaking skills. 5 groups were formed in the class and we were given images pertaining to a healthy lifestyle. As a group we were asked to describe that picture. We watched 2 videos on healthy lifestyle and we had a discussion on the same in class. We were asked to watch the video and make a food pyramid based on our eating habits. |

Language and Literature
| Having completed our immersive activities in the first week of the new academic session, we consolidated our understanding of the concepts studied so far. During the last two weeks, we have learnt how authors and speakers use various verbal and non verbal techniques to undermine, exert and establish power as part of our first unit, Language and Power. We started off our language and literature classes with an analysis of the character of Tywin Lannister in a video by observing his body language, choice of words, facial expressions, inflection, use of pauses and silence to figure out how he exerted and established his power and at the same time undermined others. Keeping these three techniques in mind, we tried to analyse another speech. Moving on, we also attempted to deconstruct an article by analysing the verbal techniques that we had learnt in the earlier classes such as bias, modality, euphemism/dysphemism, epithets and jargon along with the use of structure, linguistic devices and punctuation marks. We planned an investigation on the strength of an electromagnet which was peer assessed. Chemistry – During the past 2 weeks, we have focused on building our skills. Chemistry is a branch of science that requires certain skills that need to be practised, enhanced and are essential in MYP 5. We started off by remembering basic terminology to be used in our responses and revisited the periodic table. We revised the periodic trends and the skills to work out the valency of elements. Music
| We were introduced to our unit for this term- Music Blend. We learnt about the main task in the unit- fusing elements of Western and Indian Classical music together. Later, we initiated our unit with Western Classical music. We studied about the different eras, such as medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical and romantic. We first learnt about medieval music. We learnt about the different composers and instruments in the genre. We learnt about sacred music, and how it started to shift to secular music. We also have been practicing our songs to be performed in the upcoming investiture ceremony. We are learning a lot and having a lot of fun in our music lessons. By- Harshal Agarwal- MYP 5C |
